Embossing on paper, highlighted with grazing lighting. These pieces were made using an engraving press : A heavy metal cylinder rolls over the paper and crushes it against the shape. There is pressure downward, but also in the direction which the cylinder rolls, generating folds. Those folds are usually a nuisance, but with experience, they can be predicted. They can even become the purpose of the shapes. Just as lighting can be directed with a lightning rod, careful shapes can generate folds in precise places.
